Default to Us

Default to Us is a queer, Black-owned writing service that specialises in poetry, storytelling and wedding vows.

About

I don't think the promises we make to our loved ones should be written in haste.Love is messy, and dangerous, and unkind. Just like all good stories.
And all good stories take time to create.
Our love deserves the time it needs to be shared with the world.
Which is why I do this—to help tell the stories of those without the time to do it themselves.

i've heard of wedding vows written
in wedding gowns minutes
before the ceremony
and I wonder, if that had always been the plan

I’m just as scared to say “I love you”
as you are to say “sorry”

This poem is inspired by daydreams.Because, I still believe there exists a universe where he and I are friends.
A universe that raised him with kindness instead of cruelty.
A universe where a father saying "sorry" to his son,
is as commonplace as a son saying "I love you" to his father.

I'd bet it all on you if I could.
And I have.
And I will.

This poem is inspired by the future. As am I, every day, by my friend.
By all of what he fights for, and all of what he fights against.
And I'll never stop fighting for him.

Black as stone sits the sands.
As she licks the land dry.
Tongue tide by the aftermath
of the moon.

This poem was inspired by a puzzle.Of the sun, setting on a beach. For every piece placed we'd say "find the horizon".
To keep us steady as we worked.
But even after the corners were set and the edges laid bare—
we never finished what we started.

I followed you like snow falls
Slow.
For as long as farewells go.
For as long as there fell snow
there was you and I.
And no one else.

This poem was inspired by all-nighters.One winter, in particular, I'll never forget.
On our way back home, my friend reached for the snow on a nearby fence.
And just... stared at it.In her eyes was mischief.
In her sights was me.

FAQ

1. Why even use a vow writing service?

At first, the premise of a vow writing service does sound backwards.
Why ask another person to write the wedding vows of your big day?
Unfortunately, the exhaustion of planning weddings leaves little time to stare at a blank page.In that way, Default to Us is less about writing wedding vows, and more about a promise.
That you don't have to settle for anything less on your big day.

2. What is the writing/review process?

All services start with a video call. In it you get to talk about your story and about what your needs are.
Whether you already have an idea for your written piece, need help polishing an existing one, or have no idea where to start.
After the call, I write. Focusing on the tone and wording needed to capture your vision in its entirety.
For every draft I'll use your feedback to revise and review as many times as it takes until you're satisfied!
And then, I send the final written piece your way.

3. How long do services take?

The average time for a written piece is between 1-2 weeks!
Timing of course changes depending on the number of edits needed, and if there's a rush to get the writing done as quickly as possible!

4. What am I paying for exactly?

The final deliverables for a session are:

  • A PDF breaking down the meaning and word choice of each line of the vow.

  • An mp3 file with the suggested recital cadence of the wedding vow.

5. What is a poem vow?

A poem! That's it really. In a poem vow, priority is given to the necessary story.
To the parts that matter most of all to the speaker, and to whomever it is they're speaking to.
Simply put, nothing else matters, except what matters most.
